DROPOVIT Injection is an antipsychotic and antiemetic medication that is primarily used in medical settings for the following purposes:
Primary Uses:
1.Prevention and Treatment of Nausea and Vomiting:
- Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV): DROPOVIT is often administered to prevent or treat nausea and vomiting associated with surgical procedures, particularly when anesthesia is used.
- Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting: It may be used as part of a combination therapy to manage severe nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
2. Sedation in Surgical and Diagnostic Procedures:
- Anesthesia Adjunct: DROPOVIT can be used as an adjunct to anesthesia, providing sedation and reducing anxiety in patients undergoing surgery or certain diagnostic procedures.
- Conscious Sedation: It may be used in combination with other medications to achieve sedation while allowing the patient to remain awake and responsive.
3. Management of Agitation and Acute Psychosis:
- DROPOVIT has antipsychotic properties and can be used in emergency settings to manage severe agitation or acute psychosis, particularly when rapid sedation is required.
Mechanism of Action:
DROPOVIT is a butyrophenone derivative, similar to haloperidol, and works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, particularly the D2 subtype. This blockade helps reduce symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and psychosis. It also has some alpha-adrenergic blocking activity, which can cause hypotension and mild sedation.
Important Considerations:
- Administration: DROPOVIT is administered intravenously or intramuscularly, depending on the clinical scenario.
- Side Effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, hypotension, and dizziness. DROPOVIT is also associated with an increased risk of QT prolongation, a type of abnormal heart rhythm, which can be serious.
- Black Box Warning: Due to the risk of QT prolongation and potentially fatal arrhythmias, the FDA has issued a black box warning for DROPOVIT. It is recommended that patients be monitored for heart rhythm disturbances (e.g., through ECG) when receiving DROPOVIT, particularly at higher doses.
- Contraindications: DROPOVIT should be used cautiously or avoided in patients with a known history of prolonged QT interval, significant cardiac disease, or those taking medications that also prolong the QT interval.
DROPOVIT is effective for its intended uses but must be administered with caution, especially in patients with underlying cardiac conditions.
