NACEVIT injection is used for:
1. Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) Overdose: NAC is the standard treatment for acetaminophen overdose. It helps prevent liver damage by replenishing glutathione levels in the liver, which detoxifies harmful metabolites of acetaminophen.
2. Mucolytic Agent: NAC can be used as a mucolytic agent to break down thick mucus in the lungs, particularly in patients with conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or cystic fibrosis. While this use is more common in its oral or inhaled forms, it can also be administered intravenously in some cases.
3. Prevention of Contrast-Induced Nephropathy: NAC may be used to reduce the risk of kidney damage in patients receiving contrast agents for imaging procedures.
4. Hepatoprotective Agent: NAC is sometimes used to protect the liver from damage due to toxins, including those caused by certain drugs or environmental exposures.
NAC works by replenishing levels of glutathione, an important antioxidant in the body, and by directly neutralizing reactive oxygen species, which helps protect cells from damage.
