QUINTIV for Injection (marketed as Synercid) is a combination antibiotic used to treat certain severe bacterial infections, particularly those caused by multidrug-resistant organisms. The main uses include:

1. Treatment of Multidrug-Resistant Infections:

   - Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) Infections: Primarily used to treat infections caused by VRE, a type of bacteria that is resistant to vancomycin. It is effective in treating bloodstream infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and other severe infections caused by VRE.

   - Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA): While not the first-line treatment, QUINTIV  may be used to treat MRSA infections, particularly in cases where other treatments have failed or are not suitable.

2. Complicated Skin and Soft Tissue Infections:

   - Used for treating complicated skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA).

3. Bacteremia:

   - May be used to treat bacteremia (bloodstream infections) caused by susceptible organisms, especially when other antibiotics are ineffective due to resistance.

4. Infections in Immunocompromised Patients:

   - Can be used in immunocompromised patients, such as those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing chemotherapy, who develop severe infections caused by resistant Gram-positive bacteria.

QUINTIV work synergistically to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis, making them effective against certain resistant bacteria. This combination antibiotic is administered intravenously and is typically used in a hospital setting due to the severity of the infections it treats.

Monitoring for potential side effects is important, as the drug can cause infusion-related reactions, such as pain or inflammation at the injection site, as well as systemic effects like myalgia (muscle pain), arthralgia (joint pain), and liver enzyme elevations. The use of QUINTIV is usually reserved for cases where other antibiotics are not effective due to resistance.
