Nicardipine Hydrochloride injection is used for:
1. Acute Hypertension: Nicardipine is commonly used to manage severe hypertension, including hypertensive emergencies, where a rapid and controlled reduction in blood pressure is required. It is particularly useful when oral medications are not an option or when a fast-acting medication is needed.
2. Postoperative Hypertension: It is used to manage high blood pressure following surgery, particularly in situations where fluctuations in blood pressure can pose significant risks.
3. Acute Ischemic Stroke: Nicardipine may be used in certain cases to manage blood pressure in patients with acute ischemic stroke, helping to optimize cerebral perfusion while avoiding excessive increases in blood pressure.
4. Hypertension During Pregnancy: In cases of severe hypertension during pregnancy (such as preeclampsia), Nicardipine can be used to safely lower blood pressure.
Mechanism of Action:
Nicardipine is a calcium channel blocker (specifically, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker). It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into smooth muscle cells of the blood vessels, leading to vasodilation (widening of blood vessels). This vasodilation reduces vascular resistance, lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow.
