Phenytoin Sodium Injection

PHESTIV injection is used for:

1. Seizure Control: It is used to control and prevent seizures, particularly in emergency situations where oral administration is not feasible. This includes the treatment of status epilepticus, a prolonged or repeated seizure condition that requires immediate intervention.

2. Seizure Prevention During Surgery: It may be used to prevent seizures in patients undergoing surgery, particularly if they have a history of seizures or are at high risk for seizures due to their medical condition.

3. Management of Seizures Due to Head Injury: Phenytoin can be used to prevent seizures in patients who have suffered a traumatic brain injury.

 Mechanism of Action:

Phenytoin is an anticonvulsant that works by stabilizing neuronal membranes and decreasing the excitability of neurons in the brain. It does this by inhibiting the spread of seizure activity through the central nervous system. Specifically, phenytoin works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, which reduces the repetitive firing of neurons and helps prevent the spread of abnormal electrical activity that causes seizures.
